August 2026 Skywatching: Solar Eclipse, Perseids and a Dramatic Lunar Eclipse

August 2026 is shaping up to be one of the most exciting months for astronomy in years. A total solar eclipse, the peak of the Perseid meteor shower, brilliant Venus and a deep partial lunar eclipse are all packed into the same few weeks.
For sky watchers, the headline date is 12 August, when a total solar eclipse coincides with the New Moon. Just hours later, the Perseid meteor shower reaches its annual peak beneath exceptionally dark skies.
Later in the month, Venus puts on a bright evening display before the Full Moon passes through Earth’s shadow during a deep partial lunar eclipse.

Total Solar Eclipse on 12 August
The main astronomical event of the month is the total solar eclipse of 12 August 2026.
Totality crosses parts of northern Russia, Greenland, Iceland and northern Spain, as well as a small area of Portugal. Observers elsewhere across Europe and parts of North America will see a partial eclipse, although the exact timing and percentage of the Sun covered will depend on location. science.nasa.gov
For observers in the United Kingdom and Ireland, the eclipse will be partial and will take place late in the day. The Sun will be low in the western sky, so an observing location with a clear, unobstructed western horizon will be important.
Parts of northern Spain offer one of the most accessible opportunities to experience totality. However, because the eclipse occurs close to sunset, observers inside the path will also need a location with a clear view toward the horizon.
How to Watch Safely
It is never safe to look directly at the Sun without suitable eye protection, even when most of it is covered by the Moon.
Use one of the following methods:
Wear certified eclipse glasses from a reputable supplier.
Use a telescope or binoculars fitted with a proper solar filter over the front aperture.
Project the Sun indirectly with a pinhole projector.
Attend an organized event run by an observatory or astronomical society.

Ordinary sunglasses, smoked glass, exposed film and homemade filters do not provide adequate protection. Never look through binoculars, a camera or a telescope while wearing eclipse glasses; concentrated sunlight can damage both the glasses and your eyes.
Perseid Meteor Shower Peaks Under a New Moon
The Perseid meteor shower peaks during the night of 12-13 August, only hours after the solar eclipse. This year’s peak coincides with a New Moon, creating excellent conditions because moonlight will not wash out the fainter meteors.

The Perseids are active from approximately 17 July to 24 August, but the greatest activity is expected around the peak. Under very dark and clear skies, idealized rates may reach around 100 meteors per hour, with some forecasts suggesting still higher activity. The number actually visible from any one location is usually lower and depends on cloud cover, darkness, radiant altitude and local light pollution. rmg.co.uk
Perseid meteors are produced when Earth passes through debris left behind by Comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle. Tiny particles enter the atmosphere at high speed, heating the surrounding air and producing bright streaks of light. The shower is known for fast meteors, persistent trails and occasional fireballs.
How to See the Perseids
No telescope is needed. In fact, the naked eye gives the widest possible field of view.
Find the darkest location available, away from streetlights and illuminated buildings.
Allow at least 20 to 30 minutes for your eyes to adjust to the darkness.
Use a reclining chair or blanket so you can watch a large area of sky comfortably.
Look generally overhead rather than directly at the constellation Perseus.
Keep phone screens dim or use a red-light setting to preserve night vision.
Continue watching for at least an hour, as meteors often arrive in irregular bursts.

The hours after midnight and before dawn are generally best because the observer’s side of Earth is then turning into the stream of comet debris. Nevertheless, bright Perseids may appear at any time after darkness falls.
A Six-Planet Alignment
August’s busy sky also includes a much-discussed planetary alignment. Around mid-August, six planets can be described as occupying the same broad region of the sky from Earth’s perspective.
However, the phrase “planet parade” can be misleading. The planets will not form a perfectly straight, tightly packed line, and not all of them will be easy to see without optical aid.
Mercury, Venus, Jupiter and Saturn may be visible to the unaided eye under suitable conditions, while Uranus and Neptune generally require binoculars or a telescope. Visibility varies substantially with location, observing time and horizon conditions.
The alignment is a perspective effect rather than a rare physical gathering in space. The planets remain separated by millions or billions of kilometers, following their normal orbits around the Sun.
Venus Dominates the Evening Sky
Venus is one of the easiest objects to find this month. It appears as a brilliant point of light in the western sky after sunset and reaches greatest eastern elongation on 15 August.
Greatest elongation is the point at which an inner planet appears at its greatest angular distance east or west of the Sun. For Venus, an eastern elongation means it is visible in the evening.

A small telescope will reveal that Venus is not fully illuminated. Like the Moon, it displays phases because its appearance changes as it moves around the Sun. Its brilliance comes from a combination of proximity, reflective clouds and apparent size rather than from being fully lit.
Venus is bright enough to be seen before the sky becomes completely dark, but observers should wait until the Sun has set before attempting to locate it with binoculars or a telescope.
Deep Partial Lunar Eclipse on 27-28 August
The month concludes with a deep partial lunar eclipse on the night of 27-28 August.
A lunar eclipse occurs when Earth moves between the Sun and the Moon, causing Earth’s shadow to fall across the lunar surface. At maximum eclipse, NASA reports that roughly 93% of the Moon’s diameter will be inside the umbra, the dark central part of Earth’s shadow. The eclipsed section may appear dark brown, red or copper. These colors arise because Earth’s atmosphere filters and bends some sunlight into the shadow, with red wavelengths passing through more effectively than blue wavelengths.
Unlike a solar eclipse, a lunar eclipse is completely safe to observe with the naked eye. Binoculars or a small telescope will improve the view of Earth’s curved shadow crossing lunar craters and plains.
The eclipse will be visible from much of the nighttime side of Earth, including areas of Europe, Africa and the Americas. Local visibility will depend on the Moon’s position and the time of moonrise or moonset. timeanddate.com
