Meet the Seestar S50 Pro: ZWO's Next-Generation Smart Telescope

Three years after the original Seestar S50 changed the game for beginner astrophotography, ZWO has unveiled its successor. Officially launched on 25 August 2026, the Seestar S50 Pro doesn't just tweak the formula — it rebuilds much of the imaging system from the ground up while keeping the same compact, all-in-one philosophy that made the original so popular.Let's break down what's actually changed, and whether it's worth your attention.

The Optics: Same Aperture, Different Machine


It's worth clearing up early: the S50 Pro sticks with the same 50mm aperture as the original. If you were hoping for a bigger light-gathering telescope, that's not the story here. Instead, ZWO has focused its energy on everything around the aperture.


The new model uses a four-element apochromatic lens with Extra-low Dispersion (ED) glass, paired with a much larger 1/1.2-inch CMOS sensor. That combination pushes resolution up to 8.3 megapixels in 4K — a big leap from the 2.1-megapixel sensor in the original S50. Focal length also edges up slightly, from 250mm to 260mm.

Two Cameras Instead of One


The biggest structural change is the addition of a second camera. Where the original S50 relied on a single telephoto lens for everything, the S50 Pro pairs its 260mm telephoto channel — still the workhorse for deep-sky, lunar, solar, and planetary imaging — with a 63° wide-angle camera dedicated to Milky Way shots, nightscapes, and star trails. Both cameras capture 4K at 1x magnification, with resolution dropping off at 2x and 4x zoom, and a 1080p live view for framing shots in real time.

This second camera is what unlocks most of the S50 Pro's new tricks:

  • Starry Sky Mode, which stitches multiple frames into a single 8K Milky Way arch panorama with one tap.

  • Freeze the Ground, which keeps foreground details sharp while the sky stays tracked — a common pain point in nightscape photography.

  • EQ Mode, now supporting exposures up to 60 seconds.

  • Plan Mode, which builds and runs an imaging plan automatically once you've chosen a target, including moving through multiple targets in one session.

  • An AI Assistant for finding and imaging targets using plain-language requests, plus general observing guidance.


Existing Seestar users will still recognize the one-tap Smart Enhancement tools (noise reduction, star reduction, star removal) and manual controls for cropping, brightness, contrast, and saturation.

Longer Sessions, More Storage


Battery capacity has grown substantially, from 6,000mAh in the original S50 to 10,000mAh in the Pro — enough for up to nine hours of imaging in typical conditions. Storage has also expanded to 128GB, so longer sessions and multi-target plans won't fill the device as quickly.

Despite the upgrades, the unit stays compact: 140 × 149 × 268mm and about 2.8kg, still small enough to set up in a back garden or pack for a dark-sky trip.

Price and Launch Details


ZWO has priced the S50 Pro at $999, though a $100 launch discount brings it to $899 for anyone ordering before 15 September 2026. Pre-orders are open now through ZWO's official Seestar store and select retailers, including Amazon, with shipping starting 1 September 2026 on a first-come, first-served basis.


Is It Worth It?


For current S50 owners focused purely on deep-sky targets, the case for upgrading comes down to how much you value the wide-angle camera, Milky Way stitching, and extra battery life — none of which change the core deep-sky imaging experience much. For anyone entering the Seestar ecosystem fresh, though, the S50 Pro is a much more complete package than its predecessor: sharper optics, a genuinely useful second camera, and enough runtime to cover a full night outside.
